Teeth Whitening At Home

October 19, 2022

If in chair whitening isn’t for you and you’d rather do your whitening at your own pace, there are a few options at Skye Dental available for at home teeth whitening. At home teeth whitening is still an effective way to achieve a brighter smile however the results won’t come as immediately as in chair Zoom whitening. There are two ways to go about whitening at home you can either opt for an at home whitening kit or you can invest in a whitening toothpaste.

Take Home Whitening

Here at Skye Dental, we have the ability to offer our patients a personalised take home whitening kit. To begin the process, you would first need an appointment with one of our clinicians to take impressions of your top and bottom teeth, these are then utilised to develop a set of custom moulded trays personalised for your teeth in our inhouse lab.  Your dental practitioner, or, one of our trained auxiliary staff members will discuss with and provide you with a set of easy-to-follow instructions as well as your syringes of whitening gel to begin your whitening journey! The discussed amount of material is to be applied to the trays and inserted into your mouth. The duration of time to wear your trays will be dependent on the concentration of the material and would have been discussed with you prior to issuing. Once you are a home, if you have any concerns or issues please contact our practice where one of our team will provide you further guidance. Generally, a take home whitening system treatment can take anywhere from 7 – 10 days to reach a patients desired shade, however this will differ for each individual and will depend on the patient’s natural anatomy of their dentition.

How long will your achieved shade last?

This lies entirely on the patient’s diet ie how much heavily stained foods and liquids do you consume over a period of time? A patient’s diet will be limited during the whitening process to ensure that the best results are able to be achieved during this time. Again, this will all be discussed in greater detail during your personal consultation with one of our dental practitioners where they will be able to address all of your concerns and ensure your expectations can be met.

Whitening Toothpastes

Another option for at-home whitening is whitening toothpastes, these do not contain bleach but instead use mild abrasives that help remove surface stains. However, they are unable to alter the natural colour of teeth. When choosing a whitening toothpaste, make sure to consult with a professional about the type of toothpaste you’re using first as some products have harsh ingredients.

To ensure you make the right choice for your whitening journey, we encourage all patients to book in for a dental check and clean.
