Dental anxiety is more common than you might think, affecting nearly one in every five Australian adults. It can prevent individuals from seeking the dental care they need, leading to worsening dental health issues over time. At Skye Dental in Capalaba, we understand these fears and take a patient-centred approach to help you manage dental anxiety. Our team uses relaxation techniques, sedation options, and a comforting environment to help make your visits less stressful.

Identifying Your Dental Fears

The first step in managing dental anxiety is identifying the source of your fear. Is it the sound of the drill, the thought of pain, or something else entirely? When you visit Skye Dental, our friendly team takes the time to understand your concerns, allowing us to tailor a treatment plan that best addresses your needs. This collaborative approach helps you feel comfortable and in control throughout the process.

Practical Tips for Coping with Dental Anxiety

Even before your dental appointment, there are steps you can take to ease your anxiety:

  1. Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing techniques can help calm your nerves. Inhale slowly through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. This can help reduce stress and promote relaxation.
  2. Distraction Techniques: Bring along your favorite music or podcast to listen to during the appointment. It can be a helpful distraction from the dental procedure, keeping your mind focused on something enjoyable.
  3. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Tense and then relax each muscle group in your body, starting from your toes and working up to your head. This can release tension and help you relax.

Sedation Options at Skye Dental

At Skye Dental, we understand that dental anxiety can range from mild discomfort to severe phobias. To accommodate the needs of all our patients, we offer a variety of sedation options that aim to help you feel more comfortable and less anxious in the dental chair. Let's explore the different sedation methods we provide to help you feel more at ease during dental visits.

Inhalation Sedation

Inhalation sedation, commonly known as "happy gas" or "laughing gas," is a gentle way to help reduce anxiety during dental procedures. This method involves breathing in a nitrous oxide-oxygen mixture through a mask. The gas helps you relax and feel at ease, while still allowing you to remain conscious and responsive during the procedure.

Inhalation sedation has several advantages:

  • It takes effect quickly and has a short recovery time, allowing you to drive yourself home after your appointment.
  • It can be adjusted during the procedure to maintain a comfortable level of relaxation.
  • It is well tolerated by most patients, with minimal side effects.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking medication before your dental appointment to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. The most common oral sedative used is diazepam, also known as Valium. This method is easy to administer and can be prescribed by our dentists at Skye Dental.

Here are some benefits of oral sedation:

  • It is suited to those with mild to moderate dental anxiety.
  • It doesn't require additional equipment or an anaesthetist, making it more accessible.
  • The sedative effect is gradual, allowing you to become comfortably relaxed as your appointment approaches.

However, because oral sedatives can take time to take effect, it's essential to plan ahead. You may need someone to drive you home after your appointment, as the sedation may affect your alertness for a few hours after the procedure.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

For patients with severe dental anxiety or those undergoing complex procedures, intravenous (IV) sedation may be an option. This method involves administering sedatives directly into your bloodstream through an IV line, providing a rapid and controlled level of sedation. At Skye Dental, IV sedation is administered by an experienced anaesthetist who monitors your safety and comfort throughout the procedure.

IV sedation offers several benefits:

  • It has a rapid onset, allowing you to relax almost immediately.
  • The level of sedation can be adjusted to meet your specific needs.
  • It is suited to longer or more invasive dental procedures.
  • It has an amnesic effect, which means you may not remember much, if anything, about the procedure, which can help reduce fear and anxiety.

IV sedation is a more potent sedation option and typically requires a recovery period. You will need someone to drive you home after your appointment, and you should avoid operating heavy machinery or making important decisions until the effects wear off.

Choosing the Right Sedation for You

The choice of sedation depends on your level of anxiety, the type of dental procedure, and your overall health. At Skye Dental, our dentists will discuss your concerns and help you determine a suitable sedation option for your needs. We are committed to creating a calm and comfortable environment, using sedation to help make your dental experience more comfortable.
